Abstract

Colin Aitken is Professor of Forensic Statistics at The University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), a Fellow of the Forensic Science Society, a member of the International Statistical Institute and a Chartered Statistician. He has a long-standing research interest in the interface of statistics, law and forensic science and has published many papers on the subject. He is a co-author of Statistics and the evaluation of evidence for forensic scientists and Bayesian networks and probabilistic inference in forensic science. He is Chairman of the RSS’ working group on Statistics and the Law, an associate member of the European Academy of Forensic Sciences committee on research and development, a member of the US National Institute of Justice/National Institute of Science and Technology expert working group on Human Factors in Latent Print Analysis, and co-chairman of FORSTAT, an annual series of workshops on statistics in forensic science for members of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes. He is the Chief Editor of the journal Law, Probability and Risk. He has also been consulted as an expert in many criminal cases.
