Abstract

This chapter historicizes Muslim gender attitudes on the east coast of Africa, from their multiple origins and their transformations, through slavery, abolition, and colonialism. It argues that modern anxieties of control over women’s bodies are a new product of broader social and structural anxieties, rather than a return to an authentic and traditional Muslim religiosity.
