Abstract

Local media have played a significant role in the development of the Caribbean, advancing democracy, advocating social causes and raising awareness of national, regional and local issues. Many of them have morphed into national media, merged with larger media houses or remained small fledgling entities operating in competitive markets under financial constraints. This chapter examines the history and contemporary developments of local and national media in the English-speaking Caribbean and the important role they have played in these societies, including issues related to balance of power. It also provides a general overview of the evolution of media ecologies in these countries.
