Abstract

This chapter analyses training initiatives for journalists in the midst of challenging environments. It will examine, in particular, the training of Colombian conflict journalists for covering the war in the country. Colombia experienced an imbricated conflict with multifaceted violence for more than 50 years, which has presented diverse challenges to regional and local journalists. By using media ethnography to explore the world of local conflict journalists, this chapter will debate the feasibility of specialised journalism education in war and examine whether training initiatives could be applicable in other violent contexts. The chapter argues that there is a need to professionalise local war journalism, especially in the Global South.
