Abstract

The Synchronization Theory of Flow Experiences (STF) proposes that the experience of flow is characterized by the synchronization of cognitive control and reward networks in the brain. Almost ten years have passed since the initial publication of STF, and evidence has accumulated in support of its core predictions. At the same time, recent work in neuroscience, mathematics, and communication allows for further advancement of the STF. This chapter reviews the core assumptions and predictions of STF and discusses recent research testing its main hypotheses. In addition, it proposes five advances to STF in light of new theories and methods. Finally, three ways in which STF can be applied for pragmatic and humanitarian benefit are outlined.
