Abstract

In the popular imagination, the Russian intelligence services are a frightening and seamless tool used by former KGB officer President Vladimir Putin to consolidate his power at home and wreak havoc on his opponents abroad. Whether collecting compromising material on political opponents, murdering those who dig too deeply or reveal too much, or using cyber technology to interfere in elections in the U.S. and Europe, these agencies are often seen as all-powerful and invincible.
