Abstract

CALL research has in part been driven by continual advances in technology, leading researchers to new topics and tools to investigate. This dynamicity in the “what” of CALL research has been and continues to be accompanied by exciting developments in the “how” of research—methodology. In this chapter, we discuss a range of historical and ongoing methodological advancements in CALL related to new learning environments, various modalities, remotely conducted research, and research synthesis. We then highlight key methodological challenges to address in CALL research moving forward and discuss how research synthesis can provide additional methodological insights to guide future studies.
