This chapter reviews the existing literature on learner autonomy and technology, elaborating on the tension between the two and existing initiatives that have been taken to resolve the tension. It provides recommendations on technological design and learner autonomy development that could contribute a positive interaction between the two. It calls for future research to focus on the dialectic interaction between the two over time and to connect the research on autonomous learning with technology in the formal and in the informal learning contexts.
