Abstract

For at least 20 years, language learning has been moving from traditional, face-to-face settings into online environments, and the COVID-19 global pandemic has hastened this trend. Drawing on research from decades of technology-mediated language learning in both formal and informal settings, this chapter synthesizes best practices for online learning and instruction with the goal of giving both practitioners and researchers useful information about how to leverage technology to improve language learning outcomes. The central theme of this chapter is that for successful online language learning to take place, it matters less that the learning is online, and more that the online environment and experience are structured in such a way that they foster language learning.
