Pragmatic competence, defined as using language naturally and appropriately, requires learners to notice how target communities act in specific contexts and get usable feedback on their own attempts. This chapter presents research findings and teaching applications regarding technology which 1) makes rich content available (via telecollaboration, corpora discoveries, social media, games, digital ethnography, place-based augmented reality and even virtual reality) filled with the variation and rich social context often missing from textbooks and classroom language, 2) easily stores language used for future reflection, and 3) uses AI and gamified apps to provide iterative practice at learners’ own pace with automated feedback.
