This chapter explores the use of technology to foster oral communication in second language (L2) environments through both synchronous and asynchronous modes. Central to this discussion are theoretical perspectives in second language acquisition (SLA) related to social interaction, namely the interaction hypothesis and sociocultural theory. In addition to reviewing pioneering studies and recent trends in research related to technology and L2 speaking, this chapter evaluates which tools and tasks provide the greatest affordances to build oral proficiency, with a special focus on the benefits of carrying out asynchronous video postings. Practical recommendations are provided for teachers to facilitate the design of collaborative tasks that spark L2 communication and push learners to engage in the essential steps in SLA that are embedded in the social bedrock of interaction.
