The overarching goal of this chapter is to analyze the role and affordances of technology in second language (L2) listening instruction, assessment, and research from cognitive, interactionist, and sociocultural perspectives in SLA. The chapter outlines three main strands of research on L2 listening and technology and demonstrates how the use of technology is informed by SLA theories, as well as how these theoretical perspectives can help elucidate both the processes underlying technology-mediated listening comprehension and the role and impact of technology on L2 listening comprehension.
