Abstract

On an increasingly urbanized planet, mobilities are pervasive as ever before. The movement of people into existing urban environments and the forming of new ones has happened in waves, also in the so-called modern period. The chapter follows these waves of mobility networks such as trains, trams, cars and planes, that has concentrated, distributed and segregated people, while also emphasizing the city as a space where the ability to move is a powerful social currency. Finally, the chapter considers whether the agency of mobility is the force behind urban regions and in the end, planetary urbanism.
