Abstract

This chapter analyses the causes and driving forces of Russian expansion into the Caucasus from the fifteenth up to the nineteenth centuries, examines the different approaches towards the Christian Armenians and Georgians on the one hand and the Muslim Caucasians on the other. It details the century-long Caucasus War and the role of the Naqshbandi Sufi brotherhood and Islamic revival in mobilising the insurgency, as well as the Russian approach to pacification and colonisation of the Caucasus, including the transformation of the human geography of the region and its incorporation into the imperial administrative system.
