Abstract

This chapter introduces the Routledge Handbook of the Caucasus, which seeks to contribute to the existing literature on the Caucasus an integrated, multidisciplinary overview of this fascinating and complicated region of the world. The Handbook gathers together leading Western, Caucasian and Russian scholars of the region from different disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The result is a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional account of the Caucasus, reflecting its historical, ethno-linguistic, cultural, socio-economic and political, as well as methodological, complexities. The volume consists of 27 chapters (including this introduction), divided into six parts organised according to chronological and thematic principles.
