This chapter charts the linkages between transmedia and the construction of identity. It is argued that the social significance of transmedia today stretches beyond the enclosed spaces of fan cultures and social movements, and rather concerns identity work in general. Transmedia should be seen as a prevalent form of media ecology and life environment, and identity should be taken in its sociological understanding as a complex interface between self and society. While the first part of the chapter overviews existing research on transmedia and identity, the second part advances a broadened account based on Giddens’ theorization of modern self-identities.
