Abstract

Although it is hard to make generalisations about all women from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), I would like to share a few personal observations I have made, following from travelling in over 60 countries. My bold statement is that ‘African women may lack self-confidence and cultural pride’. Women like me face gender inequality as part of their daily lives. This inequality manifests itself in lack of educational opportunities, barriers to employment, economic marginalisation, among many other things. Young African women are particularly affected, with very little control over the economic and natural resources in their communities. They are generally unable to leverage these resources and promote development and seek better lives for themselves, their families, and the broader community.
