Abstract

The 21st century has vividly revealed that continued growth and deepening diversification of the tourism industry have led it to becoming one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Tourism is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for development and as a key driver for socioeconomic progress. The sector has the potential to address a wide range of global challenges including poverty, employment, climate change and environmental degradation. These challenges should be addressed in a sustainable manner taking into account the current and future economic, social and environmental impacts of tourism, whilst addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities as simply defined by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
