Abstract

With the exception of the United States and Canada, the American continent is, in general, a region that remains on the fringe of the most significant international conflicts. In this chapter, I ask the question: What role does Latin America play in the contemporary world security architecture (WSA)2 since the end of the Cold War? The short answer is: not much of a role. The longer answer establishes a taxonomy regarding Latin American insertion in the WSA by differentiating among active, passive, and potential roles.
