Abstract

The incomprehensible violence seen on international fronts, produced by war, ethnic strife, or fundamentalist religious practices, astonishes most of us because of the magnitude and gravity of the devastation and tragic consequences wrought on individuals, families, and communities. Twenty-first century globalization, technology, and social media have created a greater awareness of this violence and its effects on vulnerable groups, such as children and marginalized populations. The experience of violence is shattering and life changing. High-profile violence such as homicide, rape and, genocide are normative and receive more attention in the popular press and research, while commonplace threats of violence such as stalking receive less attention (Renzetti, Diesen & Bergen, 2011).
