Abstract

This essay focuses on social justice and income support policies; specifically the publicly funded income support policies that have developed in Western welfare states in the post-war period. The first section will define the parameters of social justice conceptions that have direct relevance to income support systems. I will focus on social justice as having four key dimensions: redistribution, recognition, representation and temporal justice. I will take the lead from Nancy Fraser’s (1997) theories of justice and other theorists who acknowledge the importance of the cultural and the material dimension.
