Abstract

Strategic management plays an important role to strengthen the position of a company, and it is used to develop sustainable competitive advantages. Management literature sees strategy development as a means to develop competitive advantages and earn above-average results. Japanese companies certainly have the same goals. Their strong point was traditionally to manufacture high-quality products, leveraging on the high process orientation and high level of perfectionism of the Japanese workforce. These ideals and attitudes have allowed them to develop very cost-effective processes in manufacturing. In using this core competency, Japanese companies have developed very particular strategies in order to compete internationally. Japanese management strategies and the research into this subject therefore focus mainly on improving work processes and new product development.
