Abstract

Kharia is a South Munda language spoken primarily in the southwestern areas of the state of Jharkhand (primarily in Districts Simdega and Gumla) 1 and adjoining areas of the states of Chhattisgarh (primarily in Districts Surguja and Raigarh) and Orissa (especially in Sundargarh District). According to the internet version of the Ethnologue, 2 there is also a considerable number of speakers in Assam and smaller communities elsewhere, including West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
