Historically, political responses to youth offending have focused on the individual offender. Restorative principles and practices, however, have presented an alternative framework which asserts that responsibility is communal and shared. An examination of the origins of restorative and community approaches and a critical analysis of the ideas and practices that are continuing to develop raise important questions about the directions currently taken in the field of youth justice.
