Abstract

India combines the features of a historically ancient civilization, a mature and stable modern democracy and a demographically young nation where the largest fraction of the global population under 25 years of age resides. Over the last two decades, its economic growth has positioned it among the ‘emerging economies’, which are expected to play a major role in determining the direction and dimensions of global development in the twenty-first century.
