This essay is not about the glamorous part of fashion, but is instead about the everyday lives of Chinese women who once made the majority of women’s apparel in New York City for close to forty years. During this time, the city had not only the people who designed the clothes— from glamourous wear to ordinary attire—but also the workers who were skilled enough to make them, in particular, Chinese women workers who were the backbone of the industry.
