Abstract

Human pressure on the environment is severely undermining the capacity of ecosystems to sustain long-term conditions for human life (Odum, 1979), safety (Rockström et al., 2009), well-being (MA, 2005), and economic prosperity (Jackson, 2009). Because value systems play a critical role in the way societies relate to, and manage, ecosystems, valuation has gained growing attention in environmental science and policy over recent years (TEEB, 2010).
