Abstract

The concept of ecosystem services has great potential in the planning of landscape change. For example, it frames the relation between humans and nature according to a utilitarian vision. Nature is no longer exclusively seen as an object of value that is threatened by economic and demographic growth and therefore should be protected from further damage, but as a life-support system providing benefits that can be utilized by people. This opens a new perspective on nature and biodiversity in the spatial planning of landscapes.
