Payments for ecosystem services (PES) aim to translate the often non-market value of environmental goods and services into financial incentives to preserve the ecosystems that provide these services (Salzman, 2005; Wunder et al., 2008). The basic principle behind PES is that resource owners and communities who are in a position to provide ecosystem services should be compensated for the cost of that provision, and that those who benefit from these services should pay for them, thereby internalizing the benefits.
