Abstract

Adventure programmes and activities in the outdoors have grown during recent decades, resulting in greater interest from park and protected area managers, government officials and the general public (Ewert, Attarian, Hollenhorst, Russell & Voight, 2006; Cordell, 2012). As a result, qualified outdoor leaders and guides are needed. Qualified outdoor leaders work in a variety of settings with different clientele using professional practices and training (Priest & Gass, 2005). As part of this role, leaders need to be qualified and possess a basic set of technical, interpersonal and judgement skills to fulfil their responsibilities to their participants and the industry (Kosseff, 2010).
