Abstract

The Arctic is changing. So is knowledge about the Arctic. So are the Arctic humanities, a term that has just emerged. These changes are coupled. Knowledge of the Arctic is increasingly based on scientific observation and the collection of data on environmental change. The Arctic has also forcefully entered the realm of humanities because of the geopolitical upheavals that the region has undergone in the last couple of decades. But even in these the environment holds a central position. The particular strand of globalization that we may call “environmental” indeed has the Arctic as one of its most spectacular showcases.
