Abstract

Brazil is a significant presence in the South American Atlantic. With a coastline of approximately 8,500 km and 25 per cent of the national population – which generates 70 per cent of the Brazilian gross national product (GNP) – living in coastal counties, Brazil has a significant impact on the adjacent territorial waters and beyond. From a global perspective, socio-economic activities in the coastal zone of Brazil have a great potential to influence not only the national economy and society, but also the environmental state of the South Atlantic.
