Abstract

With coasts bordering three oceans, Russia, with a total land area of 17.1 million km2 and a population size of 145.7 million, has one of the most extensive coastlines in the world (62,185 km, without taking into account small islands – see Figure 5.1). This area includes coasts on the Arctic Ocean (39,940 km), the Far East (17,740 km), the Azov and Black Seas (2,385 km), the Baltic Sea (660 km), and the Caspian Sea (1,460 km) (Table 5.1). The length of the country’s maritime border is more than 39,000 km. The area of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) totals more than 6 million km2.
