In 1998, the Australian government set Australia’s Oceans Policy in place to provide a framework for the integrated and ecosystem-based planning and management of Australia’s marine jurisdiction. The aim of the policy was to bring the whole range of marine uses and activities across all maritime sectors in Australia under a coordinated approach to management. As a nation with strong ties to the ocean, the Australian people consider the marine environment to be a major asset for the country. The Oceans Policy was built with a grand and all-encompassing scope in mind. It is an ambitious and challenging policy designed to protect the social, economic, and environmental values of Australia’s marine jurisdiction.
