Abstract

The European Union, the world’s most developed supranational cooperation of independent countries, was born essentially as a terrestrial and continental project. Its first step was the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951 to remove trade barriers for resources as coal, coke, steel, or scrap iron. The Treaty of Rome officially established the European Economic Community (EEC) on 1 January 1958, with the ambition to create a common market for the free movement of goods, workers, capital, and services on land. The most emblematic policy of the European Union, and still its largest budget, is none other than the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) created in 1962.
