With an ocean area of more than 2 million km2 and 22,000 km of coastline, Norway is a maritime nation. The marine area of the country is situated between 55 and 84°N latitude, with the Svalbard archipelago to the north in the Barents Sea and Jan Mayen Island to the northwest in the Norwegian Sea. Offshore petroleum, fisheries, aquaculture, shipping, and various marine industries are fundamental to the country’s economy, culture, and politics.
