The United States is a major maritime nation. Its ocean and coastal areas are priceless assets that support the nation’s economy, security, health and well-being, and long-term resilience. The United States claims an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 11.5 million km2 – the world’s largest (FAO, 2005). The US EEZ is 25 per cent larger than the US land mass area of 9.2 million km2, and its coastline extend for 19,924 km (CIA, 2014).
