Forest burning is the main threat to many vegetated areas throughout Europe. Its threefold impact on landscape, social welfare and environment is almost impossible to quantify. Every year, an average of 65,000 fires are ignited in Europe, setting ablaze and destroying about 500,000 hectares (1 hectare equals 2.47 acres) of vegetation (European Forest Fire Information System 2011: 2), the equivalent of almost two times the size of the country of Luxembourg (Eurostat 2014).
