War is possibly the oldest human activity, certainly the most persistent. According to one source, 14,500 wars broke out between 3500 BC and the late twentieth century, leaving only 300 years of peace (Henderson 2010). According to another, all but 5 per cent of human societies have engaged in at least occasional warfare, and most have fought constantly (Keeley 1996).
