Today, migration, mobility, and borders are familiar themes in the study of international politics. 1 That was not always the case, however, and particularly not in Security Studies. In the 1970s and 80s you would have been hard pressed to find any analysis focusing on migration in Security Studies. While it was previously considered to be a social and economic phenomenon belonging to the fields of socio-economic history, historical sociology, and anthropology, migration is now pivotal in debates surrounding global politics (Castles and Davidson 2000; Castles and Miller 1993; Sassen 1996).
