Abstract

Gender in agriculture, as a topic of research, has attracted a considerable amount of interest among scholars from diverse fields, leading to a wide array of studies focused on the ways gender is constructed (and reconstructed) within farm spaces. Dominated by qualitative enquiries – and mainly focused on the sociological aspects of gender relations, divisions, distinctions and inequalities – the literature of gender in farming provides a rich body of findings on power relations, representational codes, gender boundaries and gender identities. However, a number of critical issues remain to be explored. The aim of this chapter is to bring together the major streams of research dedicated to the intersection of gender and farming and to highlight some under-researched issues in this area.
