Abstract

Global climate change has made it an urgent priority to be planning for low-carbon economies. This will require a move away from fossil-fuel use to cleaner forms of energy supply, effective urban planning to reduce transport energy needs and regional planning to improve local self-sufficiency. There are obvious challenges involved in achieving the changes required, but the prospect of a civilized future depends critically on planning and policies aimed at the goal of low-carbon futures.
