The Japanese government has implemented a range of environmental policies. Economists often promote the use of economic instruments such as tax or emissions trading schemes aiming for economic efficiency. The introduction of economic instruments, however, faces opposition from various stakeholders in many countries. Japan is no exception; a regulatory approach is often used to control environmental impacts.
