Abstract

This review chapter examines trust in cross-level and multilevel models, where trust and its antecedents and consequences are at different levels of analysis. After a brief introduction of levels issues and definition of trust across levels, a review on generalized and political trust, trust in coworkers, teams, management/organizations and interfirm relationships, and during conflicts and after violations is presented, with a focus on integration of existing findings and theories. Implications of levels considerations for trust research are discussed. The chapter closes with theoretical and methodological recommendations for future research to advance the knowledge of trust in organizations and societies from the levels of analysis perspective.
