Abstract

In this opening chapter of the section on research into arts and education, we consider some challenges that inquiries in this area may confront. It includes issues that have arisen in the process of conducting recent research into arts education, as well as those that are likely to prove testing in the foreseeable future. Challenges that are particularly pertinent to arts and education have been prioritised over those that are more generally experienced across a range of educational and cultural research fields (e.g. the technical difficulties in measuring outcomes and impacts; the substantial problems in making valid comparisons across a diverse range of contexts and countries). ‘Challenges’ are interpreted as obstacles that need to be overcome, as well as substantive issues that deserve to be on the agenda for future research and evaluations.
