Abstract

Many jurisdictions have in recent years eliminated blanket criminal prohibitions against physician-assisted death (hereafter PAD), and others seem set to follow suit. 1 This means that in a number of jurisdictions, the ethical and philosophical debate about PAD has moved from an initial phase, in which the question of the general permissibility or impermissibility of physicians aiding their very ill patients to die has been debated (Sumner 2011), to a second phase in which ethical questions to do with the setting-up of regulatory regimes surrounding the practice of PAD are being discussed.
