Abstract

Identifying the underlying etiologies and mechanisms of many pain states is a major clinical and research challenge. Pain, nociception and pathology do not share a straightforward, isomorphic relationship and our inability to understand the underlying etiology can color our attitudes towards the symptoms. Despite this, clinical management requires a framework within which consistent, evidence-based, soundly reasoned, effective, feasible and cost-effective management strategies can be delivered.
