Abstract

Modality, the realm of the possible and the necessary, has played a significant role in the study of logical consequence. Arguably, when it was first formulated, the concept of logical consequence was understood in modal terms: in today’s vocabulary, we say that, in a valid argument, necessarily the truth of the premises guarantees the true of the conclusion, or, even better, without semantic ascent, in a valid argument, the conjunction of the premises and the negation of the conclusion is impossible.
