Since their emergence in the mid-1990s, Chinese environmental advocacy groups have creatively and courageously expanded their range of political tools and techniques. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens protesting pollution and industrial accidents and resisting planned factories, mines, dams, high-speed rail lines and other development projects are being swept into activism. The combination might best be understood as an environmental movement with Chinese characteristics.
