The places where people live have significant effects on the quality of their lives, and consequently their health. Indeed, physical and social environments are important determinants of health. The quality of environments also closely relates to inequalities across population health status. This chapter sets out how physical and social environments shape health outcomes and inequalities in five key areas – housing, transport, social environment, healthy food and greenspace. While these are not the only areas where environments impact on health, they are critical.
